Latest Drought Monitor report shows severe zone expanding in our region
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – This week’s edition of the U.S. Drought Monitor shows conditions are getting worse in our region.
The Tennessee Valley remains the drought center of the Southeast.
We are still in the Severe Drought category.
But the zone is expanding north and west in Tennessee, expanding in northwest Alabama, and jumping to the Atlanta area in Georgia.
In Tennessee, the Severe Drought zone has tripled since last week and now runs from Polk County to Giles County.
In Georgia, the Severe zone remains for our counties in the northwest corner of the state.
But it has doubled in size, moving into the Georgia mountain counties of Fannin and Gilmore Counties.
And then it jumped to the Atlanta region.
In Alabama, the severe zone is moving west along the Tennessee line.
So far, western North Carolina remains in the Moderate drought category.
