CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- One day after the tragic school bus crash on Talley Road and the investigation continues.

That’s while family and friends of those who were lost in the crash are honoring their memory through prayer and vigils.

“I’m standing here on Talley Road where the accident took place Monday afternoon, and as you can see here more and more people have been stopping by to leave this little monument. They’ve been leaving Teddy bears, balloons, lighting candles and saying prayers.”

“You always say why, you know. You always ask that question, why? They just precious little kids, you know just life just begun and then it’s taken away from them, you know, in a spare of the moment.”

Mary Smith was at home Monday when a school bus suddenly crashed into a tree that sits in front of her house, and when she heard the noise, Smith says she called 911 and immediately ran outside to help.

“I came on out and they, was about maybe three had got thrown out of the bus and one little boy he… he was just laying there, I thought he had already passed. And then it was another little boy he wanted to know if he was bleeding, because he seen all the other kids with all the blood all over them. So he wanted to know if he was bleeding I told him no. And uh then it was another boy, he was looking for his sister, and the kids they were just screaming. Oh they was just screaming as loud as they could scream, you know.”

Smith says she and others who were driving by and stopped to help stayed there with the children until police and emergency crews arrived.

“Throughout the next few days, our investigators will work on scene to thoroughly document the accident sight and gather factual information. Our mission is to understand not just what happened, but why it happened and to recommend changes to prevent it from happening again.”

During a press conference Tuesday afternoon, officials with the National Transportation Safety Board confirmed there were no seatbelts on the bus, but could not confirm if speed was the determining factor for the crash.
Surveillance video, and the bus’ engine control module are also being inspected to help investigators understand what caused the tragic accident.

“I would ask everyone to pray. That’s what we need is more prayer”

“The investigation is still in the early stages but as always you can count on News 12 to bring you updates as they become available.
