Lookouts Capture Share of Southern League Title With Jon Rodriguez’s Walk-Off Winning Home Run
What a way to win a Southern League title.
The Chattanooga Lookouts trailed Montgomery 2-1 Sunday night going to the bottom of the 9th in the fifth and final game of their divisional playoff series.
That’s when Jon Rodriguez delivered a game winning two-run homer, allowing the Lookouts to claim a share of the Southern League Championship.
Voice of the Lookouts Larry Ward on his radio call of the home run:”He’ll send the pitch. Rodriguez. High drive! Left field! Good bye baseball! Lookouts win! Lookouts win! Holy Toledo! What a cotton pickin’ finish. Oh my! The Lookouts mob him at the plate. Water. Jumping. Cheering. Waving. Fans on their feet. What a sight! What a game!”
Said Rodriguez:”The highlight of my career right here. I had the best season of my career right now in the minors. But that’s all on the back end. This is the highlight of my career.”
Said manager Jake Mauer:”Wasn’t having the series that he wanted. Got one pitch and here we are acting like idiots. (laughter) So proud of these guys. They hung in there and hung in there. To do it on a walk-off, I don’t think you could script it any better.”
More of Ward’s radio call:”And the Lookouts walk it off with a home run and win it 3-2 here in the ninth inning. You gotta love the game of baseball, and you gotta love these Lookouts.”
The Lookouts will share the Southern League title with Pensacola who beat Jacksonville in the other divisional playoff series.
The Southern League decided to cancel the championship series due to Hurricane Irma and crown co-champions this season.
