MacGyver cast talks about Friday’s show premiere

DULUTH, Ga. (WDEF) – MacGyver- One of CBS’s newest hit shows premieres this Friday.

And it shoots close-by.

Last week News12 got the chance to catch up with the show’s stars at their location shoot in Duluth, Georgia.

Justin Hires plays MacGyver’s best friend Wilt Bozer. Hires said, “It’s an iconic franchise and to be a part of it means a lot to me.”

Actress Tristin Mays works as the hacker for MacGyver’s crew, Riley Davis. Mays said, “You know what, as many times as I’ve heard that name I still get this weird, excited feeling every time I hear the name MacGyver.”

The stars of CBS’s new show MacGyver were excited to share what’s it like to be on a show with such a rich history.

Lucas Till plays MacGyver himself. Till said, “Doing a scene, actually similar to what we’re doing today, I don’t want to spoil anything but I’m kind of arc-welding a lock off, or I guess it wouldn’t be welding but I’m using these flares to like get rid of a lock, and I was looking down at what I was wearing and I was just like, ‘Ahhh, George. I actually feel like MacGyver right now.'”

The actors, like Lucas Till, spent the early part of their Tuesday running out to do news interviews in between scene rehearsals.

During one of those interviews Mays added, “The fact that I get to be part of such an iconic series is life-changing for me.”

Two cast members were happy to talk about their return to CBS.

Actor George Eads, who spent several seasons on the CBS hit CSI, said, “I feel a great sense of dedication and pride working for this company, so they kind of gave me my career. The least I can do is keep giving back, you know?”

Hires added, “I have nothing but love for CBS. I did Rush Hour for them, they asked me to do MacGyver, without any questions I said hands down I’m all in.”

Cast members say fans of the original show should tune in. Till explained, “You’re not going to be alienated for not knowing anything about the show, the original at least, and if you are a fan of the original, then you’re going to have a lot of things that you are, what do we, oh Easter eggs is what we call them.”

Mays echoed, “If you’re a big fan of the show, you’re going to definitely notice a lot of little things we’ve incorporated in there to keep the show authentic. Even when it comes to the music, the opening sequence. That I didn’t even know about but I saw it the other day for the first time and I got chills because that’s one of my favorite parts of the show, the opening sequence.”

But even new fans to the franchise should quickly pick up on the camaraderie among the cast.

Eads plays MacGyver’s right-hand man Jack Dalton. He said, “Lucas and I have gotten along really well since, really the first moment I met him. And now we’ve become really close friends so that not only do I get his back on the show, but I think I get his back away from camera, too, and he does the same for me.”

And Hires added, “I’m a comedian, first, so it’s very relaxing. To be able to just show up on set and tell some jokes and bring a little heart and humor to the show, is great and then I can go home and Lucas can worry about being here all day.”

You can catch the premiere of MacGyver Friday September 23 at 8:00 p.m. right here on News12.
