Mayor Andy Berke receives US Army HERO of the Year award

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The U.S. Army recruiting station in Chattanooga has selected Mayor Andy Berke to receive the “HERO of the Year 2016” award.

In the past two years, during the mayor’s term, the city has witnessed tragic events such as the July 2015 terrorist shooting of 4 marines and a navy petty officer, and the recent bus wreck that took the lives of 6 children from Woodmore elementary.

The Army also singled out Mayor Berke for the city’s initiative to house military veterans.

“We wanted to thank you, Mayor Andy Berke and thank you to the families of Chattanooga, ah, for your support and for the great work. You know, this city remains Chattanooga Strong,” says Capt. Peter Ahching with the US Army.

Friday’s ceremony took place at the Chattanooga Strong memorial on Lee Highway.
