Mayor Berke Addresses Violence at the State of the City Address

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – After weeks of violence, more than 650 people watched in silence as Mayor Andy Berke gave his third State of the City Address.

The speech was given at The Chattanoogan Hotel Monday afternoon. And of course Mayor Berke wasted no time addressing the violence our city has recently seen, pledging to do everything in his power to bring those responsible to justice.

The mayor also touched on our city’s Violence Reduction Initiative, which has helped take more than 750 illegal firearms off the streets, and arrest more than 300 gang members.

“We are on track to arrest even more people and to seize even more guns,” said the Mayor, “In the long run we’ve got to stop this violence, and our city is committed to doing whatever we can.”

The city has already worked to help 184 gang members get off the street and secure employment, while decreasing property crime by a little more than 12 percent.
