Mayor Berke names Phil Hyman as next Chattanooga Fire Chief
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Chattanooga has a new fire chief. Mayor Andy Berke made the announcement Monday afternoon.
Berke was at Fire Station 1 to name veteran firefighter Phil Hyman as the next Chattanooga Fire Chief.
The Mayor says there were more than 60 applicants for the job from across the country.
Chief Hyman is a native of Chattanooga and has served 22 years in the department.
During the announcement, Mayor Berke said, “Chief Hyman has spent the past few years training each and every member of our Department. He’s been on the trucks; he’s been to every different part of this department. He knows it incredibly well. He brings the respect of the department along with him. ”
“It’s clear Phil is well respected by the men and women of the Chattanooga Fire Department,” said Mayor Berke. “His decades of service combined with his knowledge of every level of the department will help lead our firefighters to do their best work in keeping Chattanooga safe and improving the lives of everyone in our community.”
Hyman, a graduate of Chattanooga State, rose through the ranks of the Chattanooga Fire Department, serving multiple years each as a Lieutenant, Captain and Battalion Chief. His tenure has included directing four fire academies resulting in 85 quality hires, creating a professional development program, enhancing training, and increasing certifications for the department.
“The opportunity to lead our Fire Department is an exciting yet challenging task; however, I am confident in the skills and abilities of the firefighters that serve the citizens of our community to continue the excellent service they provide,” said Hyman today as he accepted the Mayor’s appointment.
“As with any organization, it is the people that most define what makes it the best it can be. I particularly would like to recognize with deep respect, the other finalists for this position – my fellow firefighters, who are extremely talented and knowledgeable. I will be seeking their expertise in the days and weeks that follow and I cannot express enough how proud I am of them, their sacrifices, and hard work.”
