Mike Pompeo holds press conference with China’s foreign minister — live stream

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is holding a media availability after meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Thursday. Pompeo made the trip after President Trump’s historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jon Un in Singapore where the two leaders agreed on the first steps of developing a framework toward denuclearization of the Korean Peninsulas.

Earlier, Wang welcomed Pompeo and his delegation with a formal greeting. According to translators, Wang welcomed Pompeo on his first trip as Secretary and praised the summit between Mr. Trump and Kim as putting the world “on the right path” and eventually bringing “enduring genuine peace to the region.”

He also talked more broadly about the relationship with the U.S., saying he hopes it can “work with China” and advance relations in a “healthy manner.”

After traveling with the U.S. delegation in Singapore, Pompeo traveled to Seoul, South Korea where he reiterated that the U.S. would not relieve the North Korean regime of economic sanctions until denuclearization was achieved.

“Let me be very blunt, President Trump has been very clear about the sequencing of denuclearization and relief from the sanctions,” said Pompeo beside the South Korean and Japanese foreign ministers. He added, “We are going to get complete denuclearization, only then will there be relief from the sanctions.”

Pompeo is expected to meet later with Chinese President Xi Jinping before finally departing back home for Washington.
