Mocs Basketball Team Hoping to Avoid Another Blowout Against Georgia

Chattanooga-(WDEF) The Mocs basketball team has played Georgia twice over the last two years, losing each time by a staggering 31-points.

New Mocs coach Matt McCall is hoping to avoid another blowout, as UTC visits Georgia for their season opener.

For a guy making his Division one head coaching debut, Matt McCall feels pretty confident, thanks to the talent he’ll run out on the floor.
"They made it so I wasn’t very nervous the other night during our exhibition game versus Covenant. When you’re rolling out there with basically nine juniors and seniors, all of which played over six minutes in the first half., you feel pretty good about it."
McCall is counting on his team’s experience to battle some bruising Bulldogs.
"My biggest question going into the game is will we accept the physical challenge because the game is going to get physical."
The Mocs didn’t answer the physical challenge last year. Georgia beat the Mocs at McKenzie Arena, 86-55.
"That game is on their minds. They can’t forget about it. From a rebounding standpoint, Georgia out-rebounded us by 17 I believe in the game last year."
McCall knows a lot about Georgia from his days as a Florida assistant. He says the Dawgs have some solid freshmen like Will Jackson.
"They have a kid named Will Jackson, who I actually recruited a little bit when I was at Florida. He’s going to be one of the better freshmen in the SEC."
Said Georgia coach Mark Fox-"At some point with all of our freshmen, there has been a point in practice where I have been super impressed with each one of them."
The Georgia player who worries McCall the most is Kenny Gaines. Last year, he hung 25 on the Mocs, including 5 of six shooting behind the arc.
"We don’t need Kenny Gaines coming out and making his first two shots. You’re in for a long night if that happens. There are not too many guards in the country that are as explosive of an athlete as him, as well as can shoot the ball from the three-point line like that."
The Mocs and Bulldogs tip at 7pm Friday in Athens.
