Mocs Defense Helps Them Beat the Nation’s Top Scoring Team in the Citael

Chattanooga-(WDEF) The highest scoring team in the nation entered McKenzie Arena last night in the Citadel, but the Bulldogs sure didn’t look the part.
The Mocs defense clamped down on the Citadel to secure an 83-73 victory.
The Citadel rolled into Chattanooga averaging 97-points a game, but they left McKenzie Arena with one of their lowest scoring totals of the season.
The Mocs held the Bulldogs to 73 points.
Said head coach Matt McCall:”If you do that against the Citadel that is an accomplishment because of how many three’s they shoot and how they play. They come in here and only make eight. There have been games where they have shot 37.”
Said center Justin Tuoyo:”We pride ourselves on defense, so we just try to go out there and guard. They’ve got great shooters. Everybody on their team can shoot three’s. We just know we’ve got to take that away from them. I feel like we did. We did that to an extent tonight.”
While Justin Tuoyo flexed his muscle down the stretch, it was Johnathan Burroughs Cook who paced the Mocs offense with twenty-points.
Said McCall:”I thought Burroughs. His speed changes the game, and when teams are switching like that, Burroughs was doing an unbelievable job of getting in the lane and getting in the paint.”
Said Cook:”When they were denying the passes like when we were trying to get into our offense, I knew I could beat the guys off the dribble a lot because I feel like I can get past any guard.”
The Harlem Globetrotters will be at McKenzie Arena in one week, but Nat Dixson gave us a preview with a slick behind the back pass to Tre’ McLean for a three.
Said McCall:”But you know what, it gave us a little life. Some pop. We were a little flat there. So I mean. Hey, it’s in the stat sheet. He got an assist so.”(laughter)
The Mocs next step comes Saturday against Mercer.
Said McCall:”Every single night this group steps in between the lines, you’re getting teams best shot. You are. It’s what it is. And you’ve got to be able to mentally and physically prepare yourself for that.”
