Mocs Determined to Avoid Letdown Against VMI
Chattanooga-(WDEF) UTC looked like the preseason SoCon favorite in their win over Samford Saturday.
Several players captured weekly awards.
Now the Mocs desire another award-winning performance against VMI.
Perhaps the highlights of the Samford win for head coach Russ Huesman was watching Keon Williams run for 131 yards.
"We gave Keon a little bit of running room. That’s about all he needed. I thought Keon played excellent."
Reporter-"Your O-line opened some holes for you."
Said Williams,"They came to me actually before this past game and said, we’re going to make sure you get 100-yards."
Reporter-"Would you like for them to come to you this week, and say we’ll get you 300-yards?"
Laughs Williams,"I would love for them to say that."
Tommy Hudson returned another punt for a touchdown. But Huesman says when it comes to special teams, don’t forget punter Nick Pollard.
He keeps pinning teams deep with his rugby style punts.
Said defensive end Davis Tull,"Anytime it’s inside the 20 or the 10, Nick has been doing a great job of that. It helps us because there are certain plays that offenses typically like to run in that situation."
Reporter-"Is Nick like the 12th man on the defense maybe?"
Chuckles Tull,"Maybe an honorary defensive player. I don’t know if I want to give Nick that yet. Maybe at the end of the year. We’ll see."
The Mocs face a struggling VMI team this week.
But a win gives UTC their first 2-0 SoCon start since 1984.
Said Huesman,"Well when you don’t start 1-0, you usually don’t get to 2-0 real fast there. I guess we haven’t started 1-0 in awhile either."
Said Williams,"I mean what’s going to get us motivated is just being SoCon champions at the end of this season. We definitely can’t lose a game in the conference."
