Mocs Improve to 13-2 After Winning SoCon Showdown Against Mercer

Chattanooga-(WDEF) Chattanooga raced out to a 22-point lead in the first half against Mercer, but the Mocs were not counting on a blow-out.

Said head coach Matt McCall-"You don’t beat Duke in the NCAA Tournament and not know how to win. He (Bob Hoffman) has built a winning culture there. There was no question the game was going to get tight."
Sure enough. Coach Hoffman got hot. And so did Jordan Strawberry. He scored 24-points, including this late, three to cut the lead to two. With Mercer closing in, Greg Pryor closed’em out. The Mocs guard hit a big three with 2:30 to play to get the lead to five.
Reporter-"Did you think it was good when it left your fingers?"
Said Pryor-"I always think it’s going in." (laughter)
Added McCall-"It’s one of those where I go please don’t shoot it. Boom. Boom. It goes in."
Mocs lowered the boom on Mercer, winning 74-62.
Said McCall-"There was a lot of hype surrounding this game. I don’t know how often you are going to get two Southern Conference teams playing at this point in the year with a 12-2 and an 11-3 record."
UTC improves to 13-2 for the first time in over 30-years. Not a bad record for a first year head coach like Matt McCall.
Said Hoffman-"If you could give a coach of the year award, it should already be given to him because what he has done is off the charts."
While Mercer didn’t leave town with a win, it still sounds like they didn’t leave Chattanooga empty-handed.
Said Hoffman-"MoonPies. I have a cousin that lives here. Came up to Nashville this year when we won the tournament up there in Nashville. They brought us some. I didn’t know they even made different kinds. We got all four different kinds. Pretty tasty. Pretty tasty stuff man."
