Mocs Jasmine Joyner Just Misses Triple Double in Victory Over Wofford
(Gomocs.com) SPARTANBURG, S.C. — University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Jasmine Joyner led the Mocs to a 71-61 win over Wofford midday Thursday with her sixth double-double of the year.
Joyner had 23 points and 15 rebounds and four assists, just missing a triple-double with eight blocked shots. She was joined in double figures by junior Chelsey Shumpert and senior Queen Alford. Shumpert was 8-of-9 from the free throw line and just missed her career-high in scoring with 18 points. Alford chipped in 13 points and three rebounds.
Wofford got out to a quick 5-0 start and led by as much as nine points in the first half. The Terriers led 25-16 at the 7:52 mark of the second quarter with Maria Corella and Chloe Wanink combining for 21 points and five three pointers in the stretch.
“In the first quarter, there was not a hand in their face and they shoot 53 percent,” Chattanooga head coach Jim Foster said. “A lot of people are going to be good shooters in that situation. Once we got up and got at them, good things started happening.”
Chattanooga responded with a 15-7 run over the final 7:36 of the second frame, tying the game three times and taking the lead briefly on a jumper from junior Keiana Gilbert with 1:33 to go in the half.
Kelsey Lambdin’s 3-pointer with just over a minute to go, gave the Terriers a 32-31 halftime lead.
Chattanooga was 7-of-12 (58.3%) in the second quarter and got scoring from five different players. The Mocs outrebounded Wofford 9-4 in the period and held the Terriers to a 38.5 percent scoring effort.
The third started with Wofford stretching its lead to 34-31, but a 3-pointer from Shumpert and a pair of free throws from Joyner gave the Mocs their second lead of the game. Four ties and six lead changes later, the Mocs would take the lead for good on a pair of Gilbert free throws.
The Mocs converted three turnovers in the third quarter into four points and had eight points off five offensive rebounds and led 52-50 at the end of the frame.
With the Mocs up 65-58 late in the fourth quarter, the Terriers began fouling to send Chattanooga to the line. UTC was 6-of-8 from the charity stripe in the final minute to get a 10-point win. Wofford was 1-of-4 from the field in that time and missed both free throw attempts.
Wanink and Corella each scored a team-high 19 points and Kelsey Lambdin added in 11 points. The trio combined for 49 of the Terriers’ points and all 11 of their free throws.
The Mocs shot 48.1 percent (25-52) for the game and a season-high 18-of-20 from the free throw line. Chattanooga dominated the paint 38-14 and had 11 points from its bench, led by junior Aryanna Gilbert who had nine points on 4-of-7 shooting in 31 minutes.
The game saw eight ties and nine lead changes with Wofford leading the contest for more than 18 minutes. Chattanooga led only in the second half for 15:35.
The Mocs will take on Furman Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C.
