Mocs Jasmine Joyner Names SoCon Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga’s Jasmine Joyner has been named the Innovative Office Solutions Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 26-Feb. 1, the league office announced Tuesday. The junior forward notched 19 points, seven rebounds, six blocks, two assists and a steal as the Mocs edged ETSU, 65-57, in Johnson City, Tenn., on Saturday.
Joyner was 7-of-14 from the field against the Bucs and scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half to help UTC keep pace with Mercer and Samford in the race for the regular-season title. The Southaven, Miss., product drained a 3-pointer with 38 seconds remaining in the game to extend the Mocs’ lead to eight, all but putting the contest out of reach.
With her six blocks on Saturday, Joyner moved into second all-time among SoCon players with 271 career rejections. She ranks first in the conference and second in the nation in blocked shots per game (4.0). Joyner also leads the league in rebounds per game (9.1) and checks in fourth in field-goal percentage (.445).
Joyner and the Mocs (14-7, 5-2 SoCon) will be back in action when they host Furman (11-11, 4-3 SoCon) on Thursday. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m.
