Mocs Prepare For Top 15 Showdown With Furman

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Week five of the SoCon spring football season, and the Mocs and VMI are the only unbeaten conference teams.
But Chattanooga faces a stiff challenge tomorrow as they face perennial SoCon power Furman.

Don’t look now but the Chattanooga Mocs are close to being a top ten team. They moved up to 11th in the latest rankings.
Said head coach Rusty Wright:”It’s easy to go up when you don’t play and people in front of you lose. That helps for sure. I mean the kids like it. They think it’s cool.”
The 11th ranked Mocs get a top 15 showdown Saturday against 13th ranked Furman.
Said Wright:”Looks like two good teams on paper getting ready to play. It’ll be a very, very tough match-up for us on Saturday. It’s a hard place to win games. They don’t lose very much over there, especially in the league. We will have to play really well.”
Said linebacker Kam Jones:”This year they actually have a lot of different formations and different plays that can be a real danger to us. But I think this week is big on just being disciplined.
Said defensive lineman Devonnsha Maxwell:”I mean they’re a very good disciplined team I would say. They’re up there with James Madison when it comes to discipline. I feel like our team and their team. It will be a good game because we preach discipline as well.”
Said Wright:”I don’t know how good of a football team we are. They’re good. You watch them on film. They’re a good football team. I’m still trying to figure out what kind of football team we are right now to a certain degree.”
While the verdict on the Mocs may still be up in the air, Coach Wright loves their fight to win.
Said Wright:”I think they enjoy each other. On Saturday when that offense had the ball over there in overtime against the Citadel. That whole defensive group was standing up right behind them. We had to get them out of the way. As soon as we scored, I could hear the defensive guys yelling hey, we’re going for two. You know that’s the thing. I think those guys enjoy each other.”

The Mocs and Paladins kick at noon Saturday in Greenville, SC.
