The Urban League of Chattanooga gets their largest gift ever from one of the richest women in the world

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga began operations back in 1982. The purpose is to shine a light on racial, social and economic equity.

Earlier this year, ULGC President and CEO Candy Johnson received an email, then took part in a call from a philanthropic group, who had noticed the ULGC consistent hard work.

ULGC was then gifted, without even asking for, 2.4 million dollars. 2.4 mil!

‘We’ve never before had a million dollar gift. From anyone. But I had told the team earlier that I believed we would receive a gift.”

That gift came from MacKenzie Scott. One of the richest women in the world.

The gift was just recently announced. But ULGC actually had the money in hand a couple of months ago.

And it’s already spent. On paying off the debt at the Chattanooga Urban League’s new office space on MLK Boulevard.

Candy Johnson says they still have debt, but hopefully, it will be paid off sooner than later.

The money from MacKenzie Scott certainly gets the ball rolling.

“The burden will be lifted when we are debt free. Just like many other organizations have experienced. Then we can continue to be a pillar of hope for all.”

Johnson says the ULGC is looking long term. Making great use of a transformational gift.
