More To The Story with Staley: Trumpet Player

Tizzy Smith could be the most dedicated member of UTC's marching band

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Another early Saturday morning on the UTC campus. Very quiet. But as you walk in the back door, you’ll hear music. It’s a young man playing the trumpet!

“If you see me, I’m either listening to music or playing music. Music is my life. And I love it.”

He’s not joking! 20 year old UTC junior Tizzy Smith has been sounding the horn since 6th grade. He practices every day. During the school year, at least for three hours. Every day.

Smith…..whose sister gave him the nickname Tizzy when he was a baby….says he sometimes gets tired. But never tired of playing the trumpet. In a sense, Tizzy Smith IS a trumpet!!!

“I think the sound……it pierces the air. And you know when you hear the trumpet. It’s a bold instrument. I’m a very bold and determined person. The trumpet is a hard thing to learn. But it’s amazing when it’s played well.”

Smith plays in all of the UTC instrumental ensembles. But the marching band is on his mind these days!

The official debut of the Mocs Marching Band, under the direction of second year band director Randall Coleman, is here at Finley Stadium, September the 3rd, when the Mocs football team opens its season versus Wofford.

The marching band has grown leaps and bounds since Coleman took over the reigns last summer. Smith, who is the brass section leader, says that growth IS…something to see!!

“It’ll be amazing to see. What an exciting year. We’ve already accomplished so much. I just can’t wait to see where the group will go. I’m just so excited.”

No matter how busy he is, Smith says he’ll keep on practicing the trumpet. Jazz, classical……he says there’s nothing he won’t play. Now. Or ever.

“I would love to be in a huge symphony. But then again, I’d love to be in a small group maybe playing in a bar. Anywhere I can play, I will do it.”

Spoken like a young man majoring in instrumental performance. With trumpet, in hand.
