New 178 I-24 East exit now open

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – If you do much driving in downtown Chattanooga, you are no stranger to roadwork and having to navigate around it. TDOT now wants to make motorists aware of a newly completed exit that will help maneuvering around the Scenic City be a little easier

As part of the I 24 Interstate Improvements Project, a new traffic pattern will be implemented at Exit 178 on I-24 East. The 178 Exit gives direct access to Broad Street, something the Chattanooga Mayor’s Office said will be beneficial to the success of the new South Broad Development Project.

“So, we know the South Broad Revitalization Project was anticipated to bring hundreds of millions of dollars and much new development, including new housing and new commercial space for our small businesses, and new green spaces, and new entertainment. So, you know, it’s understandable that folks might be concerned about impacts to traffic with that,” said Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly’s Communications Leader Kirsten Yates.  “We are working closely with the master developer to ensure that a traffic impact and flow analysis is going to be completed as part of his planning to mitigate any impacts to traffic through that corridor.”

A new traffic signal is activated at the intersection of Broad Street and the new I-24 East ramp. In addition, U.S. 27 South traffic will use the William Street exit to access Broad Street.

“There’s more we can do, even on the surface streets. We are working to open up Chestnut Street, which kind of runs parallel to Broad Street. I think that will help as well,” said Yates

TDOT wants to remind motorists that they can check traffic or construction by going to TNSmartWay.com/Traffic.
