News 12 Then: Black Friday through the years

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) The experts tell us that Cyber Monday will eventually kill Black Friday shopping.

That hasn’t been the case this year, but maybe someday.

So we decided to take you back into the News 12 Archives for some comparison shopping.

First, we head back ten years.

In 2006, Amazon hadn’t stolen away all that holiday season shopping. Malls were still king. Stores remained closed on Thanksgiving, and people lined up in the middle of the night to get those door busters.

So we camped out in the line at Best Buy.

Then we want to take you back 30 years for the post-Thanksgiving shopping.

That was before they used the term “Black Friday” and it had become such a marketing ploy.

The big mall in town in 1986 was Eastgate.

And folks didn’t bother to get up early to do their shopping!

But eventually, the mall did fill up for the first day of the Christmas shopping season.
