News 12 Then: The Hamilton Place Mall Opening

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – For a generation, Hamilton Place Mall has just always been there.

But 30 years ago, Chattanooga was in the middle of a major make-over.

And Hamilton Place was a big part of it.

Before August 5th, 1987, the corner of Shallowford Road and Gunbarrel Road was a fairly sleepy intersection.

CBL picked a lot of empty land on the edge of town near some neighborhoods to build the largest mall in Tennessee right here in their hometown.

It brought new department stores and national chains to the city for the first time.

Do you remember Parisian?

Early on, neighbors complained the mall would never make it because it was too far out.

But once the developers negotiated their own exit off of the interstate, the future was set.

The mall would be a smashing success and an economic powerhouse for the county.

It also meant hard times for the city’s other malls at Eastgate and Northgate.
