News 12 Then: The Hammer Concert of 1992

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Were you at the Hammer concert at McKenzie Arena 25 years ago?

Maybe this will jog your memory.

The former MC Hammer was touring to support the hit album 2 Legit 2 Quit from six months before.

He dropped the “MC” from his name to toughen up his image as gangster rap was on the rise.

The songs of the day were “2 Legit 2 Quit,””Do Not Pass Me By,” and “This Is the Way We Roll.”

And somewhat undercutting his new tough guy image, he scored a hit with Addams Groove from the Addams Family movie.

But even though the album was a hit, peaking at #5 on the Billboard charts, this tour was a last hurrah of sorts.

The “pop rapper” couldn’t compete with the new gangster rap wave, and Hammer’s next album tanked.
