News 12 Then: Toy lead scandal of 2007 holiday season

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The holiday crisis from ten years ago involved toys with lead-based paints.

In August of 2007, Mattel recalled more than a million toys in the U.S. because of the paint.

They blamed the paint-gate on a contract manufacturer in China.

The toys included the Elmo Tub Sub, a Dora the Explorer Backpack, and the Giggle Gabber, a toy shaped like Elmo or Cookie Monster that toddlers shake to hear giggles.

That Christmas season all toy makers had to deal with nervous parents who wanted to know who painted their products.

Here in the Tennessee Valley, one toy store eased parents’ fears by testing the toys for lead.
