North Carolina shuts down Murphy License Plate Agency over violations

RALEIGH, North Carolina (WDEF) – The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles have found problems at the tag office in Murphy.

On Tuesday, they announced they are shutting down the Murphy License Plate Agency over contract violations that could involve legal violations.

The state isn’t explaining the what they found in their investigation because charges are pending.

For now, state representatives are performing a final inventory audit and remove any equipment and supplies that belong to the state.

They hope to re-open an office in Cherokee County as soon as possible.

Services such as property tax payments and registration renewals can be completed online at​.

If a customer needs to visit an LPA during the temporary closure, the three closest offices offering service Monday through Friday are:

  • Hayesville, 1440 U.S. Hwy. 64 West, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and from 1:30-5:00 p.m., 828-389-8133
  • Robbinsville, 74 S. Main St., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and from 2-5 p.m., 828-479-4896
  • Franklin, 353 Westgate Plaza, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 828-369-8165

LPAs offer vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license
plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations.
