Notre Dame Celebrates Making Their First Football State Title Game in 141 Years

Chattanooga-(WDEF) The Notre Dame school in Chattanooga was founded in 1876.
And now, 141 years later, the Irish football team has finally qualified for the school’s first ever state title game.
Notre Dame will battle Lausanne for the state crown Saturday afternoon at 4pm in Cookeville.
Notre Dame moved into a new private league division (Division II AA) to start the season, so there was a feeling out process for the Irish.
Said lineman Scooby Williams:”I mean going into the season, everybody thought we weren’t supposed to be in this division, but we just had to prove it on our own and do what we had to do.”
And Notre Dame did what they had to do two weeks ago, beating CPA 42-20 to advance to the state title game.
Said running back Cameron Wynn:”It has sunk in. Now we know we are there. We’ve been excited for at least two weeks now. We have to finish business.”
Said defensive coordinator Curt Jones:”It’s just a feeling of pride. So proud of what these kids have accomplished. This senior class. This would have been their third semifinal since they’ve started. And so to see them get over the hump and be the class to make it to the finals has just been so rewarding as a coach.”
It’s a special team because of their special teams.
Said Jones:”In the 12 games that we have played, we’ve blocked 12 punts this year. That’s one of the things that nobody talks about. I’ve been coaching at all levels. You know head coach and assistant coach since 1995, and I’ve never lost a football game that I’ve coached in when a punt has been blocked.”
Irish assistant coach Steve Daniels played quarterback at Notre Dame during their 1978 semifinal playoff run. He can’t imagine what it would be like for the Irish to finally win a state title.
Said Daniels:”I mean if that gold ball was to land here, it would be. (pause) It would be one of the biggest things that I could ever see happen at Notre Dame from the time I came here in the 10th grade to the present.”
