One fatality in Rhea County house fire

Rhea County, Tennessee(WDEF) – A Saturday morning fire claimed the life of an elderly woman who was beloved by both her family and her community.

It happened in the 300 block of Fisher Road.

Both Family members and nearby neighbors identified the woman as Joyce Burnett, 80, of Rhea County.

Burnett’s daughter-in-law told WDEF the family had already spoken to fire investigators. To their knowledge, the blaze may have been the result of an electrical problem in the attic.

Her family also said she suffered from Parkinson’s Disease while living alone in the house. But that reportedly didn’t stop family members from checking in on her everyday to make sure she was ok.

A nearby neighbor fought back tears when he learned about what happened. He said Burnett was a well liked and respectable woman.

"She was very nice. Always a nice person in the neighborhood," said Bill Houston. He further went on to elaborate why she was such a special person. "She was a wonderful grandmother and mother. She was just wonderful. She’s lived here for 20-years maybe longer than that. I hate to see this happen."

The fire remains under investigation.
