Pedestrian killed in Fort Payne Monday night

FORT PAYNE, Ala. (WDEF) — The Fort Payne Police Department says a pedestrian was killed on Glenn Boulevard Monday night.

The incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. near 1st Southern State Bank.

According to police, items from a trailer spilled on to the roadway so the passenger of the vehicle towing the trailer got out of the vehicle to retrieve items from the the roadway.

Police say that’s when the passenger was struck by a vehicle.

Police identified the passenger as 40-year-old Mary Delana Austin of Nebist, Mississippi.

Austin was flown to a hospital in Huntsville where she died from her injuries, police say.

According to Fort Payne Police, the vehicle Austin was traveling in was sitting in a turn lane with its high beams on which a witness stated were blinding to oncoming traffic.

The Fort Payne Police Department is still investigating, but says in a release it “appears there will be no criminal charges filed as it was an unfortunate accident.”
