Petition to save the Old Post Hospital in Fort Oglethorpe
Fort Oglethorpe, GA.- Standing since 1904, the Old Post Hospital has been a relic for the people of Fort Oglethorpe but that might soon end.
As development changes come to Fort Oglethorpe, it is leaving residents concerned about preserving the history of it. That is why there is a petition going around trying to preserve the historical Old Post Hospital.
“Is that somebody who acquires this property is going to do something special with this old hospital keeping in mind what the community with the historical society wants to do something that really works well with the city of Fort Oglethorpe with their efforts and also with the national park, that’s right behind us too.” says John Pless, Public Information Officer for Catoosa County.
Fort O is known for its historical battlefield, and many people in the area are trying to keep as much of their history preserved as possible. However, with the property that the Old Post Hospital sits on, it is not up to the county to decide what happens to it.
“The whole property is up for sale so it’s really going to be up to the new owners to decide what they want to do with the property. This is a building again that’s well over 100 years old. It needs a lot of care. It’s gonna take a lot of money to rehab this building, not to say that it can’t, but it’s gonna take a lot of money and obviously someone’s gonna want their return on investment.” says John Pless, Public Information Officer for Catoosa County.
As much as anyone, Catoosa County wants to save the hospital, but the conditions are severe and extreme repairs will need to be done if it were to become something for the public.
“The building is deteriorating so the bones are good but the things that do deteriorate overtime around the windows, some of the walls, some of the stairwells there’s been water in there. There’s issues with mold. Someone really is gonna have to get in there and strip it down to the bones.” says John Pless, Public Information Officer for Catoosa County.
Fort Oglethorpe Historic Preservation Commission is reaching out to get people to sign the petition and explaining why it is so important to keep history alive
