KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (WDEF) – Multiple reports out of Knoxville say the University is going back to a familiar face to lead the athletic program out of a week of turmoil.
Administrators will name coach Phillip Fulmer as the new Athletic Director to replace John Currie.
Currie was recalled from his negotiations with Washington State coach Mike Leach to Knoxville this morning and fired.
Fulmer will get a two year contract to run the athletic department.
He was already on the payroll as a special adviser to University President Joe DiPietro.
Sources say DiPietro ordered him to join Currie on his trip to North Carolina State.
And they say that was the first sign that the university was loosing confidence in his ability to find a new football coach.
