Pipe bomb explosion leaves Grundy Co. resident with serious injuries

PALMER, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies are investigating after a man detonated a pipe bomb on his property.

Deputies responded to a home on Stagecoach Road in Palmer Saturday night.

Investigators say 33-year-old Carl James Arnold had to be airlifted to the hospital with severe injuries to his left hand, abdomen and face.

They say they also found about 70 pounds of marijuana, nearly eight-thousand dollars in cash, ammunition, and four guns.

“We want to know why Mr. Arnold was messing with an explosive device,” said Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum. “We don’t think and there’s nothing that would push us to think that he was planning on using that against someone else or against a location. There’s nothing that leads us to believe that at all.”

Shrum says they also believe someone else was on the property during the explosion, but they were not hurt.

The investigation is still ongoing.
