Police: EMS transport crew member assaults partner, takes ambulance for wild ride

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. (CBS46) – A member of a private EMS crew has been arrested after he allegedly assaulted another crew member that evolved into a reckless ride through a residential neighborhood in Duluth.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to numerous calls to 911 to report that an ambulance was driving through the Cambridge Park subdivision at a high rate of speed and knocking down mailboxes.

Officers found the driver of the ambulance with a laceration to his leg, caused by jumping off the back of a moving ambulance.

The unidentified driver told police he and his partner Kyle Lathon, 22, work for Med Care EMS Transport and had been arguing all day.

Police said the two had traveled to the subdivision to pick up a person and realized they left the wheelchair needed for the transport at the hospital. This caused additional tension between the two men.

After going back to the the hospital, they picked up the wheelchair and returned to the subdivision.

Police said the driver asked Lathon to take the wheelchair to the passenger and that’s when Lathon got out, walked around the ambulance, grabbed the driver around his throat and pulled him out of the ambulance.

The driver told police Lathon pulled a knife and chased him around the ambulance.
