Police identify speed & reckless driving in charges against Woodmore bus driver

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The preliminary investigation into the Woodmore Elementary school bus crash points to speed as the main factor for the crash.

The criminal affidavit against 24 year old bus driver Johnthony Walker was travelling at a high rate of speed on Talley Road, “a narrow windy road.”

Based on witness accounts and physical evidence, the report concludes the bus was moving “well above” the posted 30 mile per hour speed limit.

The report says Walker lost control, swerved off the road to the right, and hit an elevated driveway and mailbox.

Walker then swerved to the left and began to overturn, hitting a telephone poll and tree.

“Because of the wreckless nature of Mr. Walker’s driving, combined with his very high speed and weaving in his own lane, Mr. Walker was charged with five counts of vehicular homicide by recklessness, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving.”

Hamilton County school officials this morning revealed that Walker was a contract driver working for Durham Bus Services.
