Police say suspect tazed himself in struggle with officer

ATHENS, Tennessee (WDEF) – Athens Police report a suspect tazed himself during a fight with an officer.

The incident started at 7 AM, when a Riceville firefighter reported that a man was blocking traffic in town and appeared to have blood on him.

Officer Meghan Chandler went to check him out and says she quickly realized he was very intoxicated.

She says he tried to get into her car and steal it.

They got into a fight and he wrestled her Tazer from her belt.

But as the struggle continued, he tazed himself in the abdomen.

With the help of the firefighter and another citizen, they eventually got him subdued.

They later determined that Ricardo Santana got the blood by hitting himself in the head with a liquor bottle.

After getting treated at the hospital, Santana was taken to jail, charged with Public Intoxication, Resisting Arrest, Attempted Motor Vehicle Theft and Theft of Property.

Chief Couch, of the Athens Police Department, said “I’m very proud of the way that Officer Chandler handled this situation. I’m also exceedingly thankful to serve in a city that has citizens who are willing to help an officer in need.”
