Polk County wildfire burning at nearly 450 acres, 0% contained
POLK COUNTY — Crews are actively working a wildfire in the Cherokee National Forest near McFarland and the Hiwassee River, which is burning at nearly 450 acres and is 0% contained.
Multiple agencies, including U.S. Forest Service personnel, are on scene.
Air tankers dropping fire retardant and helicopters conducting water drops are currently underway.
Individuals in this area may be experiencing smoke and reduced visibility.

• Limit outdoor activity when smoke is present
• Keep windows and doors closed
• Set HVAC systems to recirculate
• Those with respiratory conditions should take extra precautions

• Fire is burning in remote terrain south of the Hiwassee River in the Shinbone Ridge area
• No structures are currently threatened at this time
• The fire remains several miles from residential areas
• Avoid Forest Service Road 23 and surrounding forest areas
• Expect smoke and emergency traffic along Highway 68 near Farner and Turtletown
