Reality show filmed in Walker County causing a stir

CHICKAMAUGA, Georgia(WDEF) – The recent filming of a reality show in Walker County has sparked controversy over the type of influence the show may have on young drivers.

A production company called Original Media recently filmed a segment for a reality show about street racing. The actual footage was reportedly shot in a controlled environment on an old runway located right next to Dougherty Gap Road.

But an organization called Mothers against Racing on the Streets has argued that Original Media has a history of editing race footage to make it look like the racing actually took place on a street or highway.

"We’re going to have more kids being influenced to do it illegally rather than take it on a track," said M.A.R.S. Spokesperson Sandra Crea.

"If it’s doing that and conveying that message to drivers that it’s okay. Then it’s wrong," said Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson who had just learned about the allegations from M.A.R.S.

According to Walker County authorities, Original Media was granted legal permission to film on county property.

As for questions about their editing practices and intent, no one from their New York and Los Angeles offices returned phone calls from News 12.

For Crea, speaking out against street racing is very personal. Five years ago, her son was killed in a street race.

"My son and his passenger collided with a car coming over a blind hill. There were three fatalities in an instant," Crea said.

She is also convinced there is too much media giving young drivers the wrong impression.

"They’re already fueled by all the media outlets out there glorifying street racing; all the video games glorifying street racing and I feel it’s not a message we need to send out there."

In the meantime, Sheriff Wilson delivered his own message to all young drivers.

"Whatever the show is portraying, do not take that and use it to think you can get out on the roadway and do that," Wilson said.
