The Latest: Man to likely face charge of assault on officer

ATLANTA (AP) – The Latest on gunshots fired at a Georgia police officer (all times local):

10:15 a.m.

Police in an Atlanta suburb say a 21-year-old Georgia man will likely face charges including aggravated assault on a police officer after they say he opened fire on the officer from a passing vehicle.

The suspect, from Riverdale, Georgia, was apprehended after a short pursuit in Roswell, Georgia, early Friday. The Associated Press is not naming him since he hasn’t been formally charged.

In a news release, Roswell police said a motive isn’t available. Police also say the man is speaking with investigators but “his cooperation has been limited.”

Police say the officer was on routine patrol when gunshots were fired from a blue Ford Explorer shortly before 1 a.m. Friday. The suspect, in a blue Ford Explorer, was apprehended after brief chase.

The shooting happened a few hours after five police officers were killed in a Dallas sniper attack.


7 a.m.

Police in a metro Atlanta city say someone opened fire on an officer from a passing vehicle and was apprehended after a short pursuit.

Roswell police say the officer was on routine patrol when he was shot at shortly before 1 a.m. Friday.

Police said in a statement early Friday that the officer tried to stop the vehicle, and a short pursuit ended with the suspect crashing. The suspect was taken into custody.

Police said there were no reported injuries, and that no bullets struck the officer or his patrol car.

Police did not immediately provide any information about the suspect or any charges.

The shooting comes amid rising tension over police shootings and a Thursday night sniper attack that killed five officers during a protest in Dallas.

Roswell is about 20 miles north of Atlanta.
