Saban Says New QB Jacob Coker is No Lock to Start
DESTIN, Fla. (AP) – Alabama coach Nick Saban says Florida State transfer Jacob Coker is no lock to win the starting quarterback job when he joins the team in August.
Coker competed with Jameis Winston for the starting job in Tallahassee last year before backing up the eventual Heisman Trophy winner for most of the season. He injured his knee November and had surgery.
Saban said Tuesday at the Southeastern Conference meetings he hasn’t seen Coker throw since the Tide recruited him out of high school. Saban says it wouldn’t be fair to the players who went through spring practice to assume anything about Coker.
Blake Sims and Cooper Bateman are the leading contenders among the quarterbacks on the roster.
Saban also says freshman quarterback Parker McLeod, who redshirted last season, will transfer.
