Sheriff warns residents about vehicle break ins

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Hamilton county sheriff’s office is investigating a rash of car break ins over the past few weeks.

Investigators say there have been 36 break ins and 13 car thefts all because cars were left unlocked.

Sheriff Jim Hammond said “what is really significant on these break ins, is that these are crimes of opportunity folks are just leaving their cars unlocked.”

“They are leaving all kinds of things in the car that people steal. And when you question them, alot of them say I’d rather leave them unlocked than they break my window. Most of the time, tey are not attempting to break windows. They try a door.. if it is open they reach in and steal things.”

Thieves have been stealing firearms, purses, GPS units, laptops and guns.
