Shooting suspect crashes in escape attempt

FORT PAYNE, Alabama (WDEF) – DeKalb County Sheriff’s officers have charged a suspect in a shooting Friday on Sand Mountain.

It happened at a home on County road 233 between Sylvania and Rainsville.

When officers arrived on the scene, the suspect had fled.

But they soon found his vehicle in a ditch at County road 85 and 749.

They believe the driver lost control and wrecked.

But witnesses were able to direct the officers toward the woods where a man and woman had fled.

They soon caught the pair.

38 year old John Christopher Shea Hunter from Valley Head faces charges of 2nd degree Assault and discharging a firearm in a building.

Sheriff Nick Welden says “I just want to say how proud I am of all of our guys and girls that were involved in this incident.  Our deputies, investigators and narcotics unit did an outstanding job.  The response time was phenomenal and with the help of our very observant citizens, we were able to catch this subject and put him in jail.”

“Also, I want to give a huge thank you to Sylvania, Fort Payne, Valley Head and Mentone Police Departments.  We couldn’t have done it without their help.  This was an outstanding job done by all and just goes to show how working together can make tough jobs like these go just a little bit smoother.”
