Smoke detectors wake residents to fire in their home this morning

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Chattanooga firefighters say that smoke detectors just may have saved a family On Hickory Valley Road before dawn.

The fire broke out around 5:45 AM in the 2000 block.

The smoke detectors woke up the residents who evacuated the home.

Firefighters quickly dealt with the flames they could see, but found more fire underneath the home.

They stayed on the scene for a good while checking for extension and monitoring hot spots.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

No one was hurt, but the two residents will have to find somewhere else to live for awhile.

Fire officials say this case proves the value of smoke alarms.

“They are your first line of defense when something is wrong. It’s crucial that your smoke detectors are functioning properly. Please check them today. They will save your life. They give you the time you need to get out,” stressed Chattanooga Fire Marshal William Matlock.
