SRO shoots suspect outside an elementary school in Gadsen

UPDATE: Brother of 32 year old Robert Tyler White says he was depressed and suicidal.

White was the man who got into a fight with a School Resource Officer outside an elementary school in Gadsden where children were reporting for a summer program.

The SRO, who suffered minor injuries himself, ended up shooting White to death.

White’s brother told CBS 42 in Birmingham “He wasn’t some psycho trying to hurt kids.”

“He was just a messed up individual. He had problems. But he wouldn’t hurt no kids.”

GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) – Authorities say a person who was outside an Alabama elementary school was shot to death by police.

Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton tells The Gadsden Times there was a report of someone trying to get into either Walnut Park Elementary School or vehicles outside the building on Thursday morning.

The city runs summer programs for children at the school.

Horton says a police officer working as a school resource officer encountered the person, got involved in an altercation and called for backup. Other officers responded and the person was shot to death.

One officer suffered minor injuries. All the children are safe.
