How to stay prepared during severe weather
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn (WDEF) – With the recent threats of damaging storms in our area it’s time to make sure you have an emergency plan for you and your family.
Since the goal is to stay safe during severe weather, be aware and know when you are under a severe weather threat. You can do that by downloading the News 12 free app- and with a weather radio.
“Have a weather radio, it is always battery operated so you will have power no matter what. If the electricity goes out, it’s the most accurate way to receive that information immediately. We ask for everybody to stay aware. Let the storm pass then go to sleep,” says Amy Maxwell, HCEMS.
One of the best ways to stay prepared for bad weather is to have an emergency kit packed and ready to use inside your home. This kit should include water, snacks, batteries, jackets, a first aid kit and medications.
With the chance of high winds, residents who live in mobile homes, campers or houses without a basement are encouraged to seek shelter with family members or friends who have a basement or storm shelter in their home.
“The center or lowest point of the floor of your home away from windows and doors. We encourage people if they have a helmet to wear that and always protect your head. Make sure you have your family accountable. Make sure you have a plan for your house; do you know where the safest shelter location in your home is and if you don’t that’s when you need to act now,” says Maxwell.
Before you head to bed, check your local news outlet for the most recent weather updates and have your phone and weather radio volume turned all the way up.
