Supermarket Guru For the Week of 11/10
Hi I’m Phil Lempert with the New Product Hits & Misses. We have 2 HITS OF THE WEEK.
Up first, Kellogg’s Jif Peanut Butter Cereal.
This isn’t a bad idea, they just seem to have gotten the recipe wrong. It’s not overly sweet which is a good thing, but also it’s not overly peanut-buttery. The problem is when you add milk the peanut butter flavor almost disappears. Made with whole grains this cereal is just 100 calories, (without milk), 2 grams of fat and 10 grams of sugars. Add more peanut butter! Retails for $3.89 for 9.1 oz. Total Score is 81.
Sugavida Natural Sweetener Organic & Unrefined is a HIT.
Everyone wants to be the next big sugar. This one is actually claiming to be the most sustainable, nutritious and natural sweetener on the planet. It comes from the blossom of the Palmyra tree has a glycemic index of 40, is rich in B vitamins and is the only plant generated natural source of vitamin B12. The powder itself is very fine much finer than traditional sugar and the taste is not as sweet; however they recommend that you use half as much as you would regular sugar which is a good idea anyway. Half a teaspoon is just 5 calories and has 100% vitamin B1. Retails for $13.50 for 8.8 oz. Total Score is 88.
Bibigo Korean BBQ Sauce Hot & Spicy is a HIT.
As you know by now I just love great hot sauces and this is one of them. The flavor and the burn are perfect and there’s no question that we will see a lot more Korean cuisine over the next year. The major ingredients are listed right on the front: Korean pear purée and apple purée, Korean red pepper paste. The one complaint that I have is whoever designed this label designed it so no one could ever read the ingredients. What’s up with that? In today’s world shoppers want to be able to read the ingredients and determine what products they should and should not buy. Some of the ingredients are not to my liking – things like high fructose corn syrup and hydrolyzed wheat protein – but if you like hot – try it. Retails for $4.99 for 16.9 oz. Total score is 89.
Evolution Cold Pressed Coconut Water and Greens is a HIT OF THE WEEK.
Coconut water has gone through the roof, everyone knows that, this recipe that combines coconut water with pineapple, cucumber, spinach, mango, romaine and of course, kale juice. and is exceptional. The flavor is more cucumber than anything else which makes it very refreshing. 8 ounces is just 50 calories, 450 mg of potassium with 9 grams of sugars. This is definitely one beverage that you keep on drinking time and time again. Retails for $6.99 for 15.2 fl oz Totals Score is 91.
Legit Shot Caller Chocolate Peanuts Caramel Bar is a HIT OF THE WEEK.
When you take a look at this candy bar what comes to mind is a Milky Way bar, but then when you take a bite it is oh so much better. This is not one of those chocolate bars that are sickeningly sweet. It’s delicious, very rich and very flavorful and made with mostly organic ingredients. Although it has 220 calories, 11 grams of fat and 25 grams of sugar, if you’re going to indulge you should indulge with this. Retails for $1.79 for 1.7 oz. Total Score is 91.
