Supermarket Guru Report for June 22nd
Sargento Balanced Breaks Natural Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Sea Salted Cashews & Cherry Juice Infused Dried Cranberries is a HIT.
This is a great concept. Each of these trays, 3 come to a package, contains separate compartments – one for the cheese and one for the fruits and nuts. 7 grams of protein, 12 grams of fat and 180 calories. The sharp Cheddar is perfect – I found the fruit good, but the texture of the nuts being refrigerated made them a bit softer than the typical cashew. So I would leave out at room temperature a bit before eating. This is a great alternative for an afternoon snack for adults – and for kids. I would also like to see a plastic toothpick like utensil to eat the cheese with. Retails for $3.69 for 4.5 oz. (3 pack). Total Score is 87.
Silk Cashewmilk Original is a HIT.
This product tastes great – with just the right mouthfeel. Two points though: 1] it’s not a milk, milk comes from cows – call it something else and 2] The color is still a little off with a "shade of grey" OK, but for those who want a dairy free alternative, this is the way to go. An 8 oz. portion delivers just 60 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 7 grams of sugars – but less than one gram of protein. I’d like to see a better color and more protein. Retails for $3.49 for half gallon. Total Score is 88.
Les Trois Petits Cochons Mousse Truffée Pork & Chicken Liver Mousse with Truffles is a HIT.
Lookee here – you can actually see the pieces of truffle and they are throughout – not just sprinkled on top. This is a base recipe of pork, chicken liver, eggs and pork fat along with sumptuous spices. 2 ounces, or about a quarter of this package, is surprisingly just 180 calories – but it does have 16 grams of fat, 420 mg of sodium and 6 grams of protein. The taste? Amazing, smooth – perfect mouthfeel; however I love truffles and would like that flavor to be a bit more pronounced. I know those purists out there will renounce me, but i actually prefer it without the aspic (the gelatin on top). Retails for $10.99 for 8 oz. Total Score is 90.
LALA Greek Yogurt Coconut is a HIT.
Yup, coconut is back. And in the case of this yogurt I’m glad! Smooth, creamy, great flavor made with real coconut – you can actually taste and feel the coconut pieces. It does use Stevia as a sweetener along with sugar, but this recipe is so good I don’t pick up the Stevia taste whatsoever. One cup is 170 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 12 grams of protein (which is great) but 17 grams of sugars which is a little high for me. One of the best tasting coconut anything I’ve tasted. And yes, the name of the cultures are right on the label. Retails for $1.19 for 5.3 oz. Total Score is 94.
Diestel Family Turkey Ranch Organic Turkey Breast Slices French Roasted is my PICK OF THE WEEK.
When was the last, or first, time you read the ingredient label on prepackaged deli meats and it read: Organic Turkey Breast. That’s it – nothing more added. No nitrates, nitrites, phosphates or sodium added. No gluten, msg or carrageenan. Sounds like I’m doing a commercial – but I am not. The taste – the best turkey breast you’ve ever had! Diestel is known for their humane treatment of turkeys and delicious products. This product continues their tradition. Would like to see a ziplock resealable package. Retails for $6.99 for 6 oz. Total score is 97.
