Surprise Proposal at Loftis Middle School Employees

MIDDLE VALLEY, TN (WDEF) – Students across Hamilton County are now officially on their winter break and two  employees at Loftis Middle School got a very special start to their holiday break.

The gymnasium was filled with parents, students, teachers, and staff for what was thought to be an end of the semester awards ceremony, but it soon turned into a long awaited special moment.
Michael Houston, the school’s resource officer, got the entire school involved for his proposal to his now fiancée, Kelly Nelson.

Nelson is the cafeteria manager and Officer Houston, met at the school 5 years ago and have been together ever since.

“Well, I’ve been here in this school for about seventeen years and I feel like this school is our family. You know, if I was going to do it big I wanted to include everybody, the entire family”, said Officer Houston.

But according to Principal Brent Eller, it wasn’t exactly easy trying to keep it a surprise.

“He (Houston) was very secretive about things that he does, very strategic. So a lot of behind the scenes planning. And with Kelly being our cafeteria manager it sure was hard to keep the information from her. Two great individual people, that show they care about each other, care about others. It’s very obvious with who they are.”
