Suspect arrested in connection to New Years Day homicide

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) – A suspect is in custody in connection to a fatal New Years Day shooting.

Darreo Harris, 22, of Chattanooga has been charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault and illegal possession of a firearm.

According to police, Harris shot and killed Juan Boyd, 18, of Chattanooga.

The incident happened outside the Waffle House restaurant in the 4900 block of Brainerd Road.

According to police, Boyd was a known member of the Rolling 60 Crips and Harris was a member of the Kemp Drive Posse gang.

Boyd was a passenger in a car that was inside the restaurant parking lot when Harris reportedly ran up to the vehicle and fired shots.

Police say there is a recorded surveillance video that shows what happened inside the parking  lot.

Police also say the video shows the shooter placing his hand on the trunk of the vehicle. fingerprints from that section of the vehicle were lifted by detectives. Police say the fingerprints matched prints on file that belonged to Harris.

Detectives say Harris also matched the physical description of the shooter seen in the video.

Harris has a prior felony conviction for illegal drugs.

He is currently being held on a $1.5 million bond.

His next court date is January 20.
