Update: Suspect in Walker County hit and run caught

WALKER COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF/UPDATE) –  According to the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, a suspect in a hit and run death in Walker County is now in custody in Chattanooga.

Earlier in the day, an arrest warrant was issued for Chattanooga man Mitchell Taylor Horton, 27,  in a fatal hit and run case in Walker County.

Authorities in Walker County said within 15 minutes two calls came in Wednesday morning from acquaintances of the suspect.

They said one of them was the owner of the car allegedly used in the hit and run.

“The owner of the car had lent the car to the driver. The owner of the car saw all the news coverage and social media. He calls Chattanooga PD this morning alarmed that his car may have been used,” Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said.

According to officials, the other call came in from the woman who lived at the home where the car was found.

Authorities said they got a statement from her and text messages between her and the suspect.

“She let us obtain her cell phone records by consent. We contacted the GBI. The came and downloaded the phone for us, and we further established our probable cause for the suspect,” Georgia State Patrol Corporal Scotty Smith said.

Sheriff Wilson and investigators with the Georgia State Patrol said they are charging Horton with Felony Homicide by Vehicle.

The charge is in relation to the fatal hit and run crash Tuesday morning on Marble Top Road.

Relatives said 58-year-old Horace Cribbs was doing yard work at a family member’s home when he was hit by the car.
