Sweetwater man arrested for Snapchat Extortion Scheme

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WDEF) – A Sweetwater man has been arrested after he reportedly tried to extort money and other valuable items from a female victim through the social media platform Snapchat.

Brandon Douglas Shanahan, 22, was arrested and charged after he reportedly conversed with the female victim while masquerading as University of Tennessee football player Cameron Sutton.

cam suttonShanahan used the Snapchat user name “Camsutton2323” to try and convince victims that they were having conversations with the Volunteer Defensive back.

After a through investigation by the FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force, authorities revealed that Sutton himself was a victim of criminal impersonation, and had not conversed with the victim via Snapchat or any other method of communication and had no knowledge of Shanahan’s impersonation of him.

If convicted, Shanahan could face up to two years in prison.

Investigators believe that there may have been several other female victims who have been contacted by Shanahan.
