Tellico church gun discussion ends with an accidental shooting
TELLICO PLAINS, Tennessee (WDEF) – Police in Tellico Plains report an accidental shooting Thursday at a local church.
It happened at a pre-Thanksgiving lunch at the First United Methodist Church in Tellico Plains.
The group began discussing shootings at churches.
And someone asked if anyone brought a gun with them to the church.
One 81 year old man said he carried a gun with him everywhere he went.
He then unloaded it and passed it around the room.
When he got it back, he reloaded and put it in his coat.
Then someone else asked to see it.
This time, when he was trying to eject the ammunition, the gun fired.
The bullet hit him in the hand, and then his wife in the stomach.
Both were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.
Schools were temporarily locked down, but police have ruled the incident accidental.
