Tennessee Aquarium crews release sturgeons back into river
Chattanooga, TN (WDEF)- The Tennessee Aquarium released 8 lake Sturgeon into the Tennessee river in Downtown Chattanooga Friday.
They have been releasing the fish for 15 years now, but this year’s release has one major difference. All of the fish were surgically implanted with sonic tags that will allow researchers to track their movements.
"Over the last couple years we are really interested in monitoring seeing how these fish move where they go where they live during the winter during the summer we actually put tags inside their body cavities that emit a signal every 3 mins and it is a unique signal for each and every fish," said Dr. Bernie Kuhaida, Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute.
The Tennessee Aquarium spread out 29 receivers between Knoxville and Chattanooga that will pick up the signals from the Sturgeon.
