Tips for Saving Money at the Gas Pump

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — $4.09 a gallon, $4.29 a gallon, $4.34 a gallon – these are just a few of the gas prices currently listed at Chattanooga gas stations.

It’s no surprise that gas prices are going up in Chattanooga, but what can you do to save money at the pump?

“One of the biggest places that you can start is actually taking a look at your vehicle itself. So, a well-maintained vehicle is going to get better fuel economy than that of a less well-maintained vehicle, so make sure that you’re up to date on all of your oil changes, filter changes, things like that,” said Megan Cooper, a AAA representative.

You’ll also want to make sure that your tires are properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires increase resistance on the road, which reduces fuel economy.

Auto maintenance will increase your gas mileage, but maintenance costs money.

Luckily, there are some things you can do to increase fuel economy that won’t cost you a cent.

“If you are increasing your speed very sporadically, if you’re slamming on your breaks, things like that, that’s really not helping out your fuel economy,” Cooper said.

In addition to avoiding sudden stops and starts, you should also try not to drive at high speeds for longer than you have to.

According to AAA, driving over fifty miles per hour will cost you more than driving at lower speeds.

AAA also recommends avoiding traffic whenever possible.

“If you have a flexible schedule, try to avoid traveling in those high traffic times. So, if you don’t have to travel during rush hour, go ahead and try to avoid it, so you’re not sitting and idling unnecessarily in traffic,” Cooper added.

If you can take a back road instead of the interstate, it might just be worth it.
